It doesn’t work very well, let me tell you.

While I’m happy it was “just” a broken valve, the replacement part alone is $103. I guess that’s not too bad considering the valve is made of Nimonic alloy.

Hope it didn’t eff up the piston or cylinder walls. What car?

It might have damaged the turbo, but no damage elsewhere. It’s off an ‘02 Saab 9-5 Aero.

I take it the piece hasn’t been recovered? It seems like it would be death to a turbo. I can’t imagine it taking much to screw up the dynamic balance on something that spins up to 100,000 rpms.

That’s my concern. The little chunk made it out of the cylinder and the next stop would be the turbo. I’m not too concerned about rebuilding the turbo, the TD04 is pretty cheap to fix and easy to find parts for. Plus, I have an extra sitting on the shop floor right now.

Is there a cat before the turbo? My 2007 STI has a catted uppipe, so that may offer some protection to the turbo.

Nope. First stop outside the manifold is the spinny whirly bits. I’ll be pulling the turbo soon to check it out, fingers will be crossed as it was just replaced with a new OEM unit before I bought the car.

Dumb question but how did you know the valves were bad?

Misfire due to zero compression. Took a look at the piston through the spark plug hole and saw no obvious damage. Plus the car wasn’t burning oil, so I ruled out rings or cracks.

Zero compression in neutral?

There was no compression in that cylinder. Whether it was in neutral or not is irrelevant.
